Cover for the people and property you left behind: your parents’ medical bills, funeral costs, and the house you are building. Arranged from wherever you are.
Money goes home every month. Some of it is planned. Some of it is a phone call at an awkward hour, a hospital bill, a funeral, a contractor who needs paying before the next stage.
Insurance does not replace what you send. It stops the unplanned half from landing on you all at once, and it means a bad week back home is not also a financial emergency abroad.
None of it requires you to be in Kenya.
You can be the payer without being the patient. Your parents are the members, you pay the premium, and renewal notices come to you rather than to a phone nobody checks.
Check the entry age ceiling before anything else.
Insurers only accept a new member up to a certain age. Past it, the answer is no and budget does not change it. Someone already on a policy can usually renew beyond that age, which is exactly why joining earlier matters so much.
SHA is the floor, not the plan. Register for it regardless, then put private cover on top for the things that decide whether you get on a plane.
When someone dies at home, the costs arrive in one week: mortuary, transport, the service, hosting people who travel. On top of that you are buying a long-haul flight at no notice.
What happens without cover is a contribution list and one person absorbing the shortfall. If you are the one earning abroad, everybody knows who that is before the conversation starts.
Last expense pays a fixed amount, fast, so the money question leaves the room.
The cover a finished home needs is not the cover a building site needs. While it is going up you want Contractors’ All Risks. Once it is finished you want a domestic package, and the gap between the two is where people lose money.
Kenya’s next general election falls in August 2027. Standard property policies exclude political violence and terrorism outright, and the riot extension most people carry does not close that gap.
Whether it is worth insuring depends on where the property sits. What is not sensible is deciding in the month everyone else decides, which is when terms tighten and capacity leaves the market.
Read: what PVT cover actually includesPremiums are paid in Kenyan shillings by mobile money, on the same Kenyan line you already use to send money home. It stays the cheapest and least annoying way to handle a recurring bill from abroad.
Most of this is one conversation and a few dates in a calendar. The timezone is not a problem, and neither is the paperwork.
