What to Bring to an SHA Hospital

    Don't show up empty-handed:

    Required:

    • National ID card (or passport for foreigners)
    • Your phone (for SHA Super App verification)

    Helpful:

    • Previous medical records
    • List of current medications
    • Emergency contact details
    • Private insurance card (if you have top-up cover)

National ID phone and medical records prepared for an SHA hospital visit in Kenya

What If the Hospital Says No?

Sometimes hospitals claim they "don't accept SHA" even when accredited.

    Steps to take:

    1. Ask for the exact reason — Is it a system issue? Specific service not covered?

    2. Show the SHA app — Pull up the hospital's accreditation status

    3. Call SHA directly — 0800 720 601 (toll-free). They can verify and intervene.

    4. Pay and claim later — If urgent, pay out of pocket and file for reimbursement through SHA

    5. Report it — File a complaint through the SHA app. Non-compliant hospitals lose accreditation.

Public vs. Private: Which to Choose?

Go Public (KNH, Mbagathi, Mama Lucy) if:

    • Budget is tight
    • You don't mind waiting
    • It's not urgent

Go Private (Aga Khan, Nairobi Hospital, Karen) if:

    • You want faster service
    • You need specialist care
    • You're willing to pay top-up fees

SHA covers both. Private hospitals just cost more if you want extras (private room, specific doctor).
